Mai Dhai embarks on a musical journey to the US

Once echoing in the serene desserts of Tharparkar, Sindh, Mai Dhai and her musicians are now on their way to take on the world with their energetic, raw and evoking bursts of Manganiyar music. The band performed in New York last night as part of Live@365, a world music concert series at the Graduate Center at CUNY's Elebash Recital Hall and will soon be heading to Austin, Texas for the famed SXSW music festival.

Although hailing from a traditional, orthodox community, Mai Dhai is always brimming with confidence and proud of her culture. “I have confidence in my voice and the culture I come from," she told Broadway World.

"Things around there are getting stricter, especially when it comes to a woman singing on stage. I am the only women from the Manganiyar Tribe who has performed on a big stage but I am hopeful that things will get better, maybe for the next generation. And as long as my voice is with me I will keep singing.”

As always Mai Dhai proved to be a crowd-puller with her mesmerizing performance and will not only be representing Pakistan at the International Day Stage but also at Russian House as part of SXSW festival.
